Tree Planting Process

External process

Overview

Organization: Newton Tree Conservancy

My role: Service Designer (collaborated with NTC president)

Timeframe: 1 week

Summary

The Newton Tree Conservancy directors greatly favored the internal tree planting graphic, but their feedback was that the blueprint was too large and complex of a graphic to add to the website.

HOW MIGHT WE BETTER SUMMARIZE AND VISUALIZE THE TREE PLANTING PROCESS?

I returned to the drawing board and refined the large blueprint into a simpler graphic visual for the public to view.

Define the Problem

The existing website had an abundance of words which takes too much time to read and comprehend.

NTC has a different model of organizing planting days than most organizations, but the reader can’t see/understand that right away.

HOW MIGHT WE BETTER SUMMARIZE AND VISUALIZE THE TREE PLANTING PROCESS?

IDEATE

Option 1 (to the right)

I drew each icon to identify each step in a fun, simple more functional way.

I used the black and green colors and brand fonts for brand consistency.

I liked the icons, but the dark black on white background felt a little harsh.

Option 2

I replaced the black outline and text with dark grey for lighter feel.

I received feedback from a fellow service designer that it was still confusing who is involved in each step, so I added people icons.

Homeowner - plain body

NTC board member - NTC logo on body

Option 3

This layout clarified swim lanes - which party is responsible for which step.

Top row - the Newton Tree Director

Bottom row - Homeowner

PROTOTYPE / TESTING

I presented these 2 concepts (below) to the NTC Board of Directors for review and approval (A/B testing) before integrating on Squarespace website.

Overwhelmingly, Option 2 was preferred.

Final website

The final tree planting process graphic was integrated onto the Newton Tree Conservancy planting page.
